I arrived at Abbi's parents house today and felt a total sense of calm. Had a good time joking with her brother, it was cool.

I found it amusing that Abbi is such a big kid, she was squeezing her presents at 12:40 am trying to figure out what they were, that made me laugh.

We stayed up well into the night watching "Pawn Wars" on the history channel, we both seem to like that show.

She told me I need a haircut so one is coming, however she annoyed me with talk of the length so it will be longer than she would like, lol.

3:00 a.m. I was watching speedchannel while she was snorning, yes, she was SNORING!!!! (shhhh, lol). Watching the auction brought back so many memories of Jack and us watching it together on the phone and the GTO they ran through there.

I've been feeling better the last couple days both physically and mentally. My leg is healing quickly, all scabbed over now and no pain or bleeding involved. Just the occasional feeling like a needle sticking in it. Mentally, I am off work and all that stress is gone and I will be heading to Abbi's tomorrow. Somehow going to her parents place just seems to relieve all my stress. I think it's the combination of the house, which I love and feel so comfortable in, and her mom who is so welcoming and loving. And Abbi has such a calming effect on me. I'm not sure why but just being in the same room with her calms my soul no matter what is going on around me or what I am in the middle of. Steph has the same effect on me, those that do are few and far between, it's a rarity.

Heard a really funny song today by a kid named Tabenfeld or something, it was called "Merry Swiftmas" and he is singing about wanting a blond girl that can sing for Christmas and goes through a bunch of stars and then sings, "just send me Taylor Swift" - too funny.

I got backed up on my time table a bit this year. I wanted to see Sue around Christmas, I tried tonight but she was busy running around with pre-Christmas errands. I am leaving earlier than usual for Abbi's this year, an ice storm is predicted for Christmas morning so I want to be there Christmas eve, which is a little earlier than normal, I usually arrive Christmas day. So that crunched my time and I think I'm going to miss seeing Sue, she works tomorrow. I feel so bad about it since she will already be having a hard Christmas without Jack. But I don't want to get caught in the ice storm and have the standing Abbi plans for years now.

Was very productive today, moving wood from the back woodpile to the side of the burner. Also checked the oil burner to make sure it would kick on during my absence. I still have more wood to move sometime in the future but also enough by the burner to last a while if needed.

Tammy came over tonight and brought me presents, sigh. I don't buy anything. She got me a Harley shirt and John Deere Tractor toy and some chocolate penguins, lol. That was very nice of her.

Saw a 1995 Bronco with a 6 inch lift in the paper and it got me thinking. I want a toy, a camping vehicle, I miss my lifted trucks. I dunno, maybe, lol.

[i]penguin_hunter: MOVIE REVIEW # 592 - Song of Hiawatha

I love westerns, I love historical movies, movies on Indians and the like. This movie looked good in the write up but when it arrived I found it fake. Yes, fake. The movie started out bad and got worse, so bad in fact that I turned it off in about 30 minutes. I was amazed at how fake the dialog was, the camera angles sucked. The interaction with Indians and Whites was totally strange. It was like a movie for six year olds. I was very disappointed.

Bottom line, pass on this one, you would be better off staring at the wall in silence.

[i]penguin_hunter: MOVIE REVIEW # 591 - Undertow

Talk about a dysfunctional family? A father living with his two sons, the youngest of which has emotional problems, the oldest of which is busting loose as a bad-ass after his mother's death. Into this mix walks an uncle, fresh out of jail and looking for some of dad's long lost treasure that appears to be nowhere in sight. The uncle shows quickly that, to him, money is worth more than family ties and he doesn't care who he hurts to find it. A rumble between uncle and dad sends the movie into high geer as the youngsters flee the house and soon are being tracked by their uncle who believes they have the treasure.

Together they make their way, hiding in junk yards and with the help of other runaways seem to stay one step ahead of the uncle. All the way to the end.

Bottom line, average movie, Dermot Mulrooney shines as the father but it is mostly predictable. You could do better but you could do much worse for a movie that was not well known.

[i]penguin_hunter: MOVIE REVIEW # 590 - 500 Days of Summer

The previews for this really intriqued me, they looked like they were advertising a funny romantic comedy. What I got was a mostly sad movie that was presented in a bit disjointed way. Through flashbacks to different times it was somewhat hard to follow without concentrating and I don't like to concentrate on my romantic comedies. Sure, it had a few moments of clarity, of humor and of levity. But over all I found it a downer more than anything.

Bottom line, I'd pass even though it looked good.

I was so tired last night, not even sure why. I slept good the night before but last night I went to bed at 8:15, 8:15!!! What! Yeah, I laid down and thankfully set my alarm and I woke up at 5:30 this morning to my alarm. I'm not sure why I was so tired, I didn't even feel all that tired. I wonder if it's holiday depression. I just FELT like being in bed. I wasn't really tired but just wanted to lay down and curl up, forget the world, and relax. It was strange but I do know that I don't have a lot of gumption this time of year, have not for years. Christmas is for kids, they add the excitement for me, when I'm not around kids to see their excitement Christmas doesn't mean shit to me. I'm not the definition of a Christian and if I was I'm too analytical, Jesus was born in July. I guess we'll see how things go the next few days, we are only 3 days from Christmas, o boy.

My leg is getting better it seems, it stopped bleeding! Finally, on the 5th day it stopped, that excites me. It really looks gross though, big hole, little scrapes around it. No signs of infection yet, thankfully, and it's clean. It is pretty gross though.

I haven't drank since Thanksgiving, it's been a month. I get very emotional when I drink and figured it might make the holidays worse for me so I stopped and go figure, I'm still emotional, lol. Not as bad though. I guess I'm like my mom in that way. But it's been a month, that is a record for me, I'll bet I have not gone a month without drinking since I was in high school or maybe even jr. high. Yes, I started way back then, lol. I have been drinking for 34 years, it's a wonder I still have a liver. I've found I enjoy sleep much more since I stopped drinking. I might partake over the holidays just for fun, we'll see. It's not like I'm "on the wagon" or anything. I just stopped for a bit.

[i]brocklisoup: Running Multiple Sites in MAMP

Originally published at Brock Boland. Please leave any comments there.

I’ve got a few development sites running on my laptop, and I generally want them to be at the document root to mimic the live site as much as possible (ie, at http://localhost/ instead of http://localhost/Clients/ClientA/). Until today, I’ve been switching the Document Root in MAMP every time I switch projects, which is fine when you only switch projects once in a while. I just made some config changes to make this easier and a little more sensical, and I thought I’d write about it here in case anyone else is looking for ideas on the Googles.

First, open /private/etc/hosts and add hosts for each client you want to host, so your machine knows to look for the domain on your own computer. I use local.clientname.com because it’s unlikely that most sites have a local subdomain, but you can use something different. My host file has these two lines at the bottom:

127.0.0.1       local.clienta.com
127.0.0.1       local.buffalostuff.net

Then run this in Terminal to flush your DNS cache:

dscacheutil -flushcache

Now, you can navigate to those URLs (http://local.clienta.com and http://local.buffalostuff.net in my case) and MAMP will serve up whatever it has.

That’s half the job. Now, you need to configure Virtual Hosts for the domains. In the MAMP Preferences, on the Apache tab, make sure the Document Root is set to your Sites directory (in my case, /Users/bboland/Sites/). Then, open /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache/httpd.conf, and add a virtual host at the bottom of the file for each domain:

NameVirtualHost *

<VirtualHost *>
ServerName local.clienta.com
DocumentRoot /Users/bboland/Sites/ClientA
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *>
ServerName local.buffalostuff.net
DocumentRoot /Users/bboland/Sites/BuffaloStuff
</VirtualHost>

Stop and re-start the servers in MAMP. Now you can navigate to those two sites and actually get the right content.

The biggest problem I see with this is maintenance: any time you take on a new project, you need to make sure you update the hosts file and Apache config. But, since you only need to do it once, it’s not that bad.

Today was almost a carbon copy of yesterday, chilled and watched movies, babied the leg. My leg hurt worse today though and my foot is a little swollen, not sure what that might mean. When I changed the bandage the hole is still bleeding, enough to run down my leg. Not like before but it still ran and its been three days. I would have thought the bleeding would stop by now. I know puncture wounds bleed a lot but three days of bleeding?

Has anyone seen how old Peter Frampton or Robin Zander look today? It's amazing. I just can't seem to get a grip, at times, on how these people I used to look at on TV and in concert have aged. They still look the same on the album cover, lol. I guess I have a lot of company in the "not aging" well category. Aging is hard on human's. I mean look at us when we were 17 and how we looked and look at us at 47 and see the difference? Totally. Look at a dog when it's 4 and when it's 9, see the difference? Not really, well, not as much, maybe in the way they move, if it's a black lab or poodle maybe some gray but over all they look the same. Sigh.

[i]penguin_hunter: MOVIE REVIEW # 589 - Very Young Girls

A documentary that looked at the crisis of prostitution in New York City and the efforts by a few being made to help out the girls involved. The title of the movie fits since the average age of a prostitute in New York City turns out to be thirteen years old. I was very surprised by this fact. The movie delves into how the girls get involved in the business and why many of them struggle to leave, even in their own minds, believing it is the best thing for them or they are helping those that love them (their pimps).

Bottom line, very insightful but sad documentary but should be viewed if you want to see the reality and grittiness of the real world in our large cities today.

Spent the day hunkered down in the house. It began snowing last night about 4 a.m. and has continued for the last 18 hours at varying consistencies. We have about 7 or 8 inches now I'd estimate and calling for up to 12 over all. With my leg being injured I decided it was best to skip Ali's Christmas party because it would take walking on unsure footing and driving in bad weather to get there. Normally that would not bother me but with the injury I chose safety. Maybe I am really getting old after all.

Steve & LouAnn's band, the Hilltown Band, was live streaming on the net today from Lehigh Valley, very cool stuff to sit and listen to a set and recognize the voices and songs. Watched a bit of History Channel & netflix streaming movies. Read some. Just chilled and watched the snow out the window.

I talked to Jake today, he was about to head in for a 12 hour shift. He is working for the township now and when it snows he gets to drive the snow plow. I guess the over time would be cool.

Was surprised to read today that Orange Juice, Apple Juice & Milk all have more calories per 8 ounce cup than coke.

The leg is healing well it seems, it really doesn't hurt too much today. A received a lot of calls and contacts today about it, it's good to be so cared about. I guess word has been spreading that I stuck a hole in it a couple days ago.

[i]penguin_hunter: MOVIE REVIEW # 588 - Game Plan

A feel good Disney movie about a self centered superstar football player who suddenly finds out he has an eight year old daughter, when she shows up at his door. As with most movies of this type there is nothing groundbreaking but if you like the feel good family movie this one was a good one for the genre.

Bottom line, nothing jumped out but it was decent and good for the kids too.

A lot has been going on lately but then mostly a lot of the same old thing. Work has been in a bit of a turmoil as the news has shown. A lot of people trying to jam in unused vacation days too so we have been shorthanded a bit.

And the big news, I fell the other night at the wood pile while carrying a big log and went down on a stick which poked a hole in my leg beside my shin. I've never seen so much blood come out of me. Soaked up my entire jammy leg and sock, filled my shoe with so much blood that when I walked it squirted out the side. I ended up with blood all over the house from when I came in and called for help. I thought I might have to go to the hospital but when I cleaned it up it slowed down bleeding a bit. Got up the next morning and it was still seeping. Went to the doctor, yep, that's right, lol. He said it should seep, it's cleaning itself. Got some antibiotics to ward off infection.

Chillin out this weekend and giving the leg a rest. They are calling for about a foot of snow and I don't think it's a good idea for me to walking around too much with my leg like this on unsure footing. I guess I'm maturing enough to realize these things now.

[i]brocklisoup: Blog Bankruptcy

Originally published at Brock Boland. Please leave any comments there.

Not unlike last time, I’ve been putting off posting because there are more important things I haven’t had a chance to write about. So, I’m declaring blog bankruptcy yet again, with the understanding that I feel bad that I haven’t written about:

  • Our awesome wedding
  • Our awesome honeymoon
  • Turning 26
  • Being in DC for four full years
  • Leaving the job I’ve had for those four years
  • Starting a new job
  • Paying off my credit cards (thanks entirely to Erin)
  • Various other more minor things

I still intend to write about that stuff soon-ish, but I’m not going to feel bad about posting about other, smaller stuff in the meantime.
